NOTIFICATION: Approval/Denial letters will be mailed in the middle of May 2024 for all transfer requests received by March 1, 2024.
After the Transfer Window is closed/ (March 1, 2024 through June 5, 2024) letters will be mailed in mid July 2024.
Transfer requests received March 2, 2023 or later will be considered based on space availability, program impaction, and appropriate attendance and behavior after all requests received during the Open Transfer Window have been processed.

Intra-district Transfer Process
Any parent or guardian of a student residing within the Colton Joint Unified School District boundaries may apply for a transfer to any District school. This is done by submitting an Intradistrict transfer request. Please see below for conditions of approval. Please see Interdistrict Transfers if you live outside CJUSD boundaries
Transfer Window Application Period:
January 16, 2024 through March 1, 2024Intradistrict Transfer Requests Received January 16 through March 1, 2024:
Intradistrict transfer requests are granted based on space availability. All students MUST be enrolled in their home school site for computer purposes before an Intradistrict transfer request can be completed. If the number of applications received exceeds the spaces available, a lottery will be held to determine which applications will be approved and the order in which the remaining students will be placed on a waiting list. (Education Code 35160.5)
Intradistrict Transfer Requests Received After March 2, 2024 for the 2024/2025 school year:
Intradistrict transfer requests are granted on space availability. In the event requests exceed capacity at the school or a specific grade level within the school, approvals will be determined by a lottery noted above. Therefore, applications received after March 2, 2024 are added to a secondary wait list determined by a random drawing (lottery). However, the District may also enroll students from the Interdistrict List to balance educational programs and enrollment numbers. Applications received from March 2, 2024 through June 5, 2024 will be placed in a separate lottery. Transfer applications received after June 5, 2024 may be considered based upon space availability after all other transfers have been processed.***IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL APPROVED TRANSFERS:
- Parent/guardian assumes responsibility for providing transportation.
- Students must attend school and arrive at school on time and classes 95% of the time based on their beginning date of enrollment for a school year. (This includes absences, tardies, early releases and late pick-ups will count against the student’s attendance.)
- Students must maintain proper conduct at school and at school-related functions and activities and have no outside suspensions.
Transfers may be revoked at any time if any of the above conditions are not met, if unexpected growth occurs at the school, or if any of the information in the transfer request application has been falsified.
Intradistrict Transfer Request Forms:
Intradistrict Transfer Request Forms are available for download.Note: When a student is granted an Intradistrict transfer for the school requested, they will attend that school until they complete the highest grade level at that school as long as the conditions of approval listed above are met. (i.e., highest grade level at elementary is sixth (6th) grade and highest grade level at middle school is eighth (8th) grade.) Upon completion of the highest grade level at your assigned transfer school, you are automatically enrolled back to your home school (school of residence) based on your address. You will need to complete a new Intradistrict Transfer Application for the new school year if you wish to attend a school other than your school of residence.
NOTICE: No Student who is applying for a Transfer will be allowed to try out for a team/squad prior to your transfer being approved or denied:All students on a current intra-district transfer do not have to renew their intra-district transfer application unless requesting a different school, transitioning into Middle School or High School.
Inter-district Transfer Process
Outgoing Interdistrict transfers (For those who reside within CJUSD boundaries but wish to attend school in another district) Completed applications must be submitted during the same Transfer Application Period. Outgoing transfer requests will only be approved for reasons stated in Board Policy. Applications will be reviewed and accepted based on space availability. All Applications must be allowed time for the proper review procedures and documentation. For that reason, families cannot walk-in and be released on the same day. Please note that the CJUSD will limit the number of pupils transferring out to 3% of the total enrollment per California Education Code.
Incoming inter-district transfers (For those who live outside CJUSD boundaries but wish to attend a school within the CJUSD) Applications must be picked up from the student’s home district for release of the student. The application will then be sent to our office for review. Please allow a sufficient amount of time for this process so as to ensure that the application will arrive during the Transfer Application Period. If student is not currently enrolled in the Colton Joint Unified School District a current copy of the student’s discipline history and attendance must be submitted within the open enrollment period or the application will not be considered. Applications will be reviewed and accepted based on space availability. If the number of applications exceeds the number of spaces available, then California Education Code requires that a lottery be held to determine which applications will be approved and the order in which the remaining students will be placed on a waiting list. All students on a current incoming inter-district transfer do not have to renew their interdistrict transfer application unless requesting a different school, transitioning to a Middle School or High School or have moved to another district of residence.
NOTICE: No Student who is applying for a Transfer will be allowed to try out for a team/squad prior to your transfer being approved or denied:
Transfer requests received during the Transfer Window Period will be placed into a Lottery
Transfer requests received after the Transfer window has closed (after March 1, 2023) will be Reviewed/approved after the Wait List from the Lottery List of persons requesting transfers during the open transfer window has been exhausted.
