  • Dear Star Families,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. Ms. Guillen and I are delighted to serve as your administrators for Smith. We consider it an honor to work alongside the STAR community- students, staff, and parents in creating positive learning opportunities. Our mission at Smith is to develop independent readers, writers, and problem solvers through the teaching of established educational standards. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character- that is the goal of true education.”

This year will be quite different than past years. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, CJUSD announced on July 16th we will be opening this academic school year in a distance learning model. Teams of teachers, administrators, and support staff have been working tirelessly to create a comprehensive distance learning curriculum plan and program. It will be imperative to your student’s academic success that your student is able to connect and participate in their online learning sessions daily.

The first day of school is August 5th. Your student’s teacher will be reaching out to you and/or your student through their school email and the email/phone number found on your emergency card.

We are excited to welcome new teachers and staff to our special education department. I know the STAR community will join me in helpling to support them as they become familiar with our site and students.

Ms. Guillen and I are looking forward to a continued partnership with our starrific families that make Smith such an incredible place. This is going to be an amazing year full of new challenges, fun, and learning for us all.

    Respectfully,

    Michelle Scribner, Ed.D
