Regional Science Fair Crowns 37 Gold-Medal Winning Students
Ontario, CA – Thirty-seven students from the San Bernardino, Inyo and Mono region received gold medals following the 37th annual Inland Science and Engineering Fair’s awards ceremony on April 4.
The students from the three-county region were among 407 projects from approximately 500 students in the region that competed at the event. The gold-medal recipients were in three categories: Elementary, Junior and Senior divisions. Only the Junior and Senior projects advance to the California State Science Fair, which will be held in Los Angeles in May.
Three San Bernardino County students won Sweepstakes Awards for the outstanding project in their respective divisions. The Sweepstakes winners were: Sidney-Corinne Williams of Cooley Ranch Elementary in Colton Joint Unified School District (Elementary Division); Noah Cain of Ranchero Middle in Hesperia Unified (Junior Division); and Laura Noronha of Redlands High in Redlands Unified (Senior Division).
Three projects also qualified for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix in May. Intel qualifiers are William Porayouw of Redlands High in Redlands Unified; Ellery McQuilkin of Lee Vining High in Eastern Sierra Unified; and Noronha of Redlands High.
Individual and group projects were judged in 23 categories of science – from microbiology to zoology, math, and physics to electronics, and consumer sciences to earth sciences. The regional fair is sponsored by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, Inyo County Office of Education, Mono County Superintendent of Schools and Professional Engineers of California Government.
