WHAT IS NJROTC?

Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training (NJROTC) is a citizenship program offered
at Bloomington High School that teaches life skills and prepares young men and
women to become future leaders.  You will grow as an individual both mentally and
physically while developing LIFELONG friendships. It is an opportunity to acquire
strong leadership skills that will benefit you throughout your life well beyond
graduation.  These are the same skills that will make you a better student and get
the most from your high school experience.  NJROTC is offered all four years and
continues through to graduation. The benefits of NJROTC at Bloomington High
School are significant.  High school students who join NJROTC receive P.E. credits, and
looks favorable on college applications and job resumes.  Additionally, if your choice is to join the military, you can obtain two paygrades higher.

The NJROTC mission is to instill in students in the United States secondary education institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.

History

The NJROTC program was established by Public Law in 1964 and may be found in Title 10, U.S. Code, Chapter 102. The program is conducted at accredited secondary schools throughout the nation, by instructors who are retired Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers and enlisted personnel. The NJROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as our maritime heritage, the operations, seamanship, navigation and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by community service activities, drill competitions, field meets, flights, visits to naval activities, marksmanship training, and other military training. Uniforms, textbooks, training aids, travel allowance, and a substantial portion of instructors' salaries are provided by the Navy.
